evaluation 3

Evaluation Question 3 What have you learned from your audience feedback?

In order for us to be able to have any audience feedback we have done pitch infant of our class who was the majority of our audience. We presented our pitch on power point and it went through all of the plans for our music video, as a result of our feedback we then changed some of our original ideas
the feedback that we received the most on the negative side was "Security issues when filming in certain places" as we were planning to do our filming on a lot of rooftops within the city, with our original plan we were going to do a bit of it on some car park roof tops however we had already had problems with security saying we couldn't film on them roof tops and from the advice from our class and teachers we thought we should look for some different locations. A large majority of our filming was then done down a street in a run-down area of Leicester we thought this would suit our video because we were going for that urban feel and this location portrayed the mise en scene we wanted. The street had both of or artists performing down it and was one of the few locations where both of or performers were together, example of this are found at 00:27, 01:23 and 02:46.
We have also used some abandoned buildings etc to do some shooting there was one place we knew that was safe and had is abandoned so we decided to have a look round, the first building we looked at was in a total mess and would have been unsafe to film in however we went to look in another building and we really liked the back drop of it. From the location we were able to source 3 different locations only two are used in our music video though as we thought this would be ideal. The shots where we have used these only have Alfie involved can be seen at 1:51and 2:40 we liked the contrast of the wall and our artists outfit so this was good for filming.
When we were filming if we did see anyone we could ask to do some filming their we did ask them one of these locations was near a factory this location can be found at 0:34, 1:57 and 2:12 we asked a man who looked like he was either the owner or high up in the chain of this company and he said that it was fine if we didn’t make any mess.
From our first draft video a lot has been changed and mixed around, one of the major changes we have made is that we were going to include some shots with a car in. the car we were using was a 2003 Nissan Micra, however the feedback we received from our teacher stated ‘The car sequences don’t work’. When we asked him why he said that the car would fit in with the music video if we were to use a car he recommended we used a battered up car. After looking at some of our research it was clear why he said this as one of the video that we took inspiration from was rat boys sign on, in his video he used an old battered up car which added to the quirkiness of their video. We realised that it would be hard to find someone with a battered up car and it defiantly wasn’t in our budget, the change of this prop then had a big change on the whole of our video as this was going to be one of the main aspects of the video. We had to come up with different ideas then for what we could use instead.
In our first video we had also included an alcoholic beverage in the video our teacher told us to lose this prop even though this wasn’t a big change for us it helped us to know that we shouldn’t include them in. it has helped as we might have had to reshoot a lot more if we included more alcohol in, or we might have had to blur it out of the whole sing which also would have caused a lot more work than necessary.
We were also told to include more outfit changes as this would make our video look more professional as other conventional music videos include outfit changes throughout their videos. The feedback from our teacher wrote ‘Try including 3 different outfits for the lead singer’ as we have two main singers we made sure that both of our singers had outfit changes. How we decided when to change outfits was by when there in a different location we would give them an outfit change, this would then show correlation between locations and also show the different locations better. Throughout the video Alfie has 7 outfits on pretty much all of them are seen very soon off after the song starts, they can be found at- 0:08, 0:24, 0:26, 0:32, 0:35, 1:37 and 1:50. Fin has a total of these can be seen at 0:05, 0:14, 0:26 and 0:35. We had taken our teachers advice on-board and that’s how our artists ended up with more outfit changes than in previous videos. I think that the outfit changes have improved our video as its one of the main parts of being able to capture to of the genres style sense, especially with clothing being such an important thing to people who would be considered indie it was important to show that we could portray the style.

One of the mistakes we made with our first video was that there were too many static shots, we have changed our camera shots a lot from the beginning video to our final product. The feedback we received on our camera shots stated ‘Avoid static shots (specifically the sat down shot). Always have some movement (either the camera or the background). Consider foreground and background.’ From reading this advice we have then made pretty much our whole music video free hand this made it have more movement throughout the video and because our song was quite upbeat the freehand camera suited the music better than the static shots. It made the video more entertaining instead of a dull motionless video, we have also got the performers doing more in the video s they are dancing and with the two of them they were a lot better performing on camera as it gave them a good energy between the two of them.
The video we have created had quite a controversial idea with it, the reason for this is that we had two performers for the video but for the actual song it is just one singer. We had thought that we would have fin sing the chorus and Alfie to sing the rest of the song. The reason for this was because we liked the look of both of them and found that when they were together they created an energy that we couldn't get when it was just one of them performing. From the beginning I had always thought that the verses sounded different enough almost to be separate people, we thought that we could play it off like the Cribs as they are both very similar sounding however it is two singers. We were advised by our teacher to 'Make a decision regarding who will be your singer' however when we talked to him and expressed our opinions he said that it could be done but that we would have to be careful and it might be hard to pull it off but he agreed on some of the things we were saying especially with the energy between them.

In conclusion it was important that we received the feedback that we have because even though we had done a lot of self-analysis we weren't very happy with our first product but our teacher was able to push us into the right direction so that we could create the music video we wanted. As a group we received the feedback together so that we could make the decisions on what we were going to do about it and then discuss with our teachers about further how we would improve our video and what we would have to do in order for it to be completed successfully.
